Wyatt’s Take

  • A government engineer with access to sensitive energy infrastructure allegedly tried to help a terror group that attacks U.S. allies.
  • Officials say he shopped for drone parts and bomb-making materials while working inside the Department of Energy.
  • The case raises fresh questions about vetting and security inside federal agencies that handle critical infrastructure.

Federal agents arrested a Department of Energy electrical engineer Thursday on charges he tried to help the Iran-backed Houthis, a designated terror group.

The suspect, Ashton Hamed Ellaboudy, 51, of Richland, Washington, faces allegations of attempting to supply material support to the terrorists while also buying items linked to explosives and drones.

“Ashton Hamed Ellaboudy, 51, of Richland, Washington, was charged with attempting to provide material support or resources to the Houthis, a designated foreign terrorist organization.”

The arrest highlights growing fears that radical elements may have slipped into sensitive federal posts that touch national security and critical infrastructure.

Heartland workers already know the cost when government agencies put politics ahead of basic security checks.

Many Americans are asking why anyone with terror ties was allowed inside the Energy Department in the first place.
