January 1, Tennessee Law Expands Home Defense Rights

Wyatt’s Take

  • Tennessee lawmakers passed a bill allowing citizens to use deadly force to protect property in specific cases.
  • The measure covers threats such as arson, burglary, and robbery.
  • Supporters say the law gives homeowners stronger protection for their livelihoods, while critics dispute the change.

Representative Kip Capley said current law can leave victims hesitating while a crime is unfolding.

“Right now, under current law, if someone is breaking into your property, if they’re stealing from you, if they’re destroying what you’ve worked your entire life to build, you’re expected to wait,” Capley said during the debate.

Traditional self-defense laws usually require a person to prove they feared for their physical life before using force.

This new measure acknowledges that property and home are central to many families’ sense of security and dignity.

Groups like the USCCA said they would help educate gun owners on the new rules.

The bill now heads to the governor’s desk for final approval.

The government should never be able to tell someone that they can or cannot protect their own f**king property. You don’t want the sons of a bitches getting shot make sure they stay out and off of my property.

Good comment but that’s just not how the law works in certain states in the US. The way things are getting worse in this world we should be able to protect everything we own and our families.

I agree 100%.It is insane criminals have more rights than law abiding citizens and law enforcement. In most states you have to be dead before you have a right to defend yourself and your family. So many law abiding citizens are getting killed, police are being sued, lose their jobs just because they are doing their jobs. It’s insane.
