January 1, Oregon Hands Massive Settlement to Violent Inmate in Prison Fight

Wyatt’s Take
- Oregon paid nearly $300,000 to a convicted killer after a civil rights lawsuit.
- The inmate said prison staff failed to protect him from harassment and violent offenders.
- Attorney fees accounted for $200,000 of the settlement, and the case changed prison handling policies.
The inmate, whose birth name is Daniel Lee Smith, claimed prison staff failed to protect him from other violent offenders. He alleged that guards ignored his complaints about cell assignments and daily harassment.
Oregon records show the inmate has been taking female hormones since 2020. He is now being held at a women’s correctional facility despite his history of violence.
Attorney fees took up $200,000 of the total settlement amount. This legal battle forced the state to change how it handles certain prisoners within the Department of Corrections.
The inmate is not scheduled to be released from state custody until 2049. This payout is another example of a blue state prioritizing radical social agendas over common sense justice.
Wyatt Matters
Rewarding violent criminals with six-figure settlements undermines the rule of law and insults the families of their victims. Hardworking taxpayers expect their money to go toward public safety, not the comfort of killers.
