- Law enforcement acted fast, saving lives from a planned terror strike.
Authorities stopped an attack inspired by ISIS that was planned for New Year’s Eve in North Carolina. They arrested 18-year-old Christian Sturdivant, who is accused of trying to help a foreign terrorist group according to the Justice Department.
Officials said Sturdivant wanted to attack a local grocery store and the Burger King where he worked, using knives and hammers. The criminal complaint alleges he aimed for a “martyrdom” style attack.
“The accused allegedly wanted to be a soldier for ISIS and made plans to commit a violent attack on New Year’s Eve in support of that terrorist group, but the FBI and our partners put a stop to that,” FBI Director Kash Patel stated.
Sturdivant reportedly had been consuming ISIS propaganda online and posting about the group. In one post, he included an image of Jesus figurines with the caption, “May Allah curse the cross worshipers.” He began talking in December with an undercover officer, saying he would “do jihad soon” and called himself “a soldier of the state.” He sent an image of weapons he planned to use.
Investigators searching his home found notes labeled “New Year’s Attack 2026” and materials hidden beneath his bed. Authorities said he had thought about such attacks as far back as 2022, when he was stopped from attacking a neighbor by his grandfather. Sturdivant remains in custody and could face up to 20 years in prison.
“This successful collaboration between federal and local law enforcement saved American lives from a horrific terrorist attack on New Year’s Eve,” said Attorney General Pam Bondi. “The Department of Justice remains vigilant in our pursuit of evil ISIS sympathizers — anyone plotting to commit such depraved attacks will face the full force of the law.”
Our law enforcement officers worked together and got ahead of a deadly threat. Their efforts stopped violence before it started. Stay alert and value those who stand guard in our communities.
