Wyatt’s Take

  • Jay Jones wished for harm and death against a Republican, shocking the public.
  • Jones’ hateful texts bring real questions about law, safety, and who runs Virginia.
  • Left-wing rhetoric and threats fuel political violence—Middle Americans notice.

Jay Jones, a Democrat running for Virginia Attorney General, was exposed for sending disturbing messages about killing Republican Todd Gilbert and wishing death on Gilbert’s kids. This news comes right after GOP delegate Kim Taylor reported getting a death threat, following Democrat Abigail Spanberger’s call for her supporters to “let your rage fuel you.”

Many folks see a pattern: heated, often violent talk from the left only inspires more danger. Taylor warned, “violent rhetoric is not harmless–it puts real people in real danger.”

Jones’ comments, made to Republican legislator Carrie Coyner in 2022, detailed how he’d target Gilbert even over infamous dictators. Coyner scolded him, “It really bothers me when you talk about hurting people or wishing death on them…It isn’t ok.” Jones didn’t apologize and doubled down, saying policy only changes when leaders suffer pain like parents do when losing kids to violence.

He even suggested wishing that Gilbert’s wife would witness her own child die. Coyner ended the call in anger. Later, Jones downplayed the issue, but stated again, “Only when people feel pain personally do they move on policy,” and accused the Gilberts of being “evil” and “breeding little fascists.”

The pattern of threats has some worried about left-wing violence spiraling out of control. Jones hopes to become Attorney General, but many are asking if someone with fantasies of political violence should be trusted.

Republican Lt. Gov. Winsome Earle-Sears demanded Jones drop out, saying, “This is horrible to read and should be wholly disqualifying of someone running for an office that protects the people of Virginia.” Spanberger issued a weak statement but didn’t drop her support for Jones, insisting, “I will always condemn violent language in and out of politics.”

The idea that people seeking power would wish harm on opponents should make every everyday Virginian uneasy. Middle America is watching as leftist threats pile up.

Our country needs clear lines against political violence. If this troubles you, share this story and speak up for real accountability.

Wyatt Matters

Out here, our strength is our respect for life and neighbor, no matter our differences. Leaders who joke about killing opponents or their children don’t share those values and have no place running things for working folks.
