January 1, Illinois Turns Out Big for Charlie Kirk Memorials
Wyatt’s Take
- Hundreds in Illinois honored Charlie Kirk with prayer vigils and public gatherings.
- Memorials took place at schools, community centers, and Kirk’s hometown.
- The nation and world also paused to remember his conservative impact.
Across Illinois, folks honored Turning Point USA founder Charlie Kirk with candlelight vigils, solemn prayers, and memorial gatherings. People showed up in big numbers where Kirk got his start and led a movement that inspired young conservatives nationwide.
At Illinois State University, students and supporters built a tribute right where Kirk spoke earlier this year. They placed flags, flowers, handwritten notes, and an open Bible to remember him.
Almost a hundred gathered for a prayer service at the campus flagpole, singing worship songs and praying for his family.
The Hanover Township Republicans hosted another event where hundreds lit candles, prayed, and shared stories about what Kirk meant to them.
Lemont, Kirk’s hometown and the birthplace of Turning Point USA, saw several hundred folks come together for a candlelight remembrance. They sang the national anthem, made signs like ‘You will be missed,’ and left flags and photos outside his first office.
These gatherings followed similar memorials held nationwide and abroad. Kirk, 31, was assassinated on September 10 while speaking in Utah. Law enforcement arrested a suspect soon after the shooting.
People around the world showed support, including a large vigil in London with U.S. flags, hymns, and candlelight. Poland’s parliament even held a moment of silence.
Back home, sports teams like the Yankees, Cubs, and the NFL paused to honor Kirk. President Trump ordered the American flag flown at half-staff and announced Kirk would receive the Presidential Medal of Freedom. A public memorial will take place in Arizona’s State Farm Stadium later this month.
Kirk leaves behind his wife, Erika, and their two children.
Even as the media moves on, Kirk’s legacy endures wherever faith and freedom hold meaning.
