Folks, let’s chat about something happening up in New York City. Zohran Mamdani, the Democratic nominee for mayor, is stirring up quite a bit of conversation. Here’s the scoop: even though he doesn’t say he’s Black, he checked the “African-American” box on his college application to Columbia University, along with the “Asian” box.
Now, this all came out because of a hack at the university, and The New York Times jumped on the story. It’s got people talking, especially since it’s just before July 4th weekend.
Let me break it down for you. Mamdani’s folks are Indian, but he was born in Uganda and says he’s really an “American who was born in Africa.” He likes to focus more on his South Asian roots and his Muslim faith. After beating Andrew Cuomo in the primary, he got pretty excited about being the first South Asian and Muslim to run for mayor there.
But here’s the kicker: Mamdani admitted he also checked the African American box on other college applications. He says that’s because there weren’t good choices for his background. College forms didn’t really fit, so he ticked a few boxes to try to show the full picture of who he is.
The Times pointed out that back when Mamdani applied, Columbia might have been using race-conscious admissions. So, saying he was Black might have helped him get in. They also looked around and couldn’t find any other times he called himself African American.
So that’s what’s buzzing right now in the Big Apple. It’s got folks asking questions about identity, college admissions, and how all these things mix together.

His parents are Indian (Asia) and he was born in Uganda (Africa). Elon Musk could also check African American, as he was born in South Africa. This may shock some of you, but not all Africans are dark skinned.
