January 1, US Army Offers $50K Recruitment Bonus

The U.S. Army now offers a maximum enlistment bonus of $50,000 to highly skilled individuals who commit to six years in the service.

Maj. Gen. Kevin Vereen, head of Army Recruiting Command, cited school closures and the competitive job market as reasons for recruiters’ challenges over the past year.

“We are still living the implications of 2020 and the onset of COVID, when the school systems basically shut down,” Vereen told AP. “We lost a full class of young men and women that we didn’t have contact with, face-to-face.”

The Army’s maximum bonus was previously $40,000. The final amount depends on several factors, including what career the recruit ultimately selects. According to AP, some specialized roles, such as special forces or missile defense crew, often come with maximum bonuses.

“We’re in a competitive market,” Vereen said. “How we incentivize is absolutely essential, and that is absolutely something that we know that is important to trying to get somebody to come and join the military.”
