January 1, NBA Team’s CATASTROPHIC Gamble Costs Them Everything

Wyatt’s Take
- Indiana Pacers lost their top draft pick in a risky trade that spectacularly backfired — they gambled on keeping a top-four pick but landed at No. 5, handing it straight to the Los Angeles Clippers
- Team president Kevin Pritchard issued a public apology admitting he ‘owns’ the decision, but fans are furious they gave up a chance at generational talent for a mid-tier center
- This disaster proves once again that executives making calculated risks with taxpayer-funded arenas and fan loyalty often leave working-class supporters holding the bag
The Indiana Pacers just learned a painful lesson about gambling with their future. After finishing with a dismal 19-63 record — just one season removed from reaching the NBA Finals — the team’s front office made a risky trade that has now blown up in spectacular fashion.
Heading into Sunday’s NBA Draft Lottery, the Pacers had a 52.1% chance of securing a top-four pick. They even had a 14% shot at landing the coveted No. 1 overall selection in what’s being called a generational draft class.
But when the lottery results came in, Indiana wasn’t among the top four picks. That’s when panic set in.
Here’s why: The Pacers had traded their first-round pick to the Los Angeles Clippers in exchange for center Ivica Zubac. But there was a catch — the pick was only protected if it landed in the top four. If Indiana fell to No. 5 or lower, the Clippers would own it.
The Pacers landed at exactly No. 5. The pick is now gone, handed straight to Los Angeles.
Team president Kevin Pritchard took to social media to fall on his sword, issuing an apology to the fan base.
“I’m really sorry to all our fans,” he wrote on X. “I own taking this risk. Surprised it came up 5th after this year. I thought we were due some luck. But please remember – this team deserved a starting center to compete with the best teams next year. We have always been resilient.”
Resilient or not, fans weren’t having it. The comments section lit up with anger and disbelief.
“You lose Myles Turner and add Zubac,” one user fired back. “You lose [Benedict] Mathurin and the number 5 pick with absolutely nothing in return. This is why fans are upset, for a center who not even a top 5 center in the NBA. Who trades their future away for Ivan [sic] Zubac???”
Another pointed out the brutal timing, calling this a “generational draft” and expressing shock that the Pacers won’t be picking from such a deep talent pool.
“If I were a Pacers fan and my team traded away a top 5 pick for Ivica Zubac in the middle of a tanking season I would be beyond devastated,” another user wrote.
The Pacers were without All-Star point guard Tyrese Haliburton all season after he suffered an Achilles injury during the NBA Finals against the Oklahoma City Thunder. Key players like Pascal Siakam, Andrew Nembhard, and Aaron Nesmith are expected back next season.
But losing out on this draft hurts even more because of the elite talent available. The 2026 class features BYU’s AJ Dybantsa, Kansas’ Darryn Peterson, UNC’s Caleb Wilson, and Duke’s Cam Boozer — all potential franchise-changers.
Instead, the Pacers walked away with nothing. The Clippers now control the No. 5 pick, and Indiana is left wondering what might have been.
Why It Matters
This isn’t just about basketball — it’s about accountability. Fans invest their time, money, and hearts into these teams, and when executives make reckless gambles that don’t pay off, it’s the everyday people who suffer. Pritchard’s apology is a start, but words don’t rebuild what’s been lost. Middle America knows all too well what it’s like when the people at the top make risky bets and the folks at the bottom pay the price.
