January 1, Wealthy Schools Cave on LGBTQ Lesson Opt-Outs
Wyatt’s Take
- A D.C. suburb admits thousands of school employees lack updated background checks, raising safety concerns.
- Parents now have a say on LGBTQ lessons after the Supreme Court pushed for opt-outs, with schools claiming it’s a burden but showing no real proof.
- School officials shift their stance, finally agreeing to notify parents and let them protect their kids’ values.
Montgomery County Public Schools in a wealthy suburb of D.C. admitted nearly half their school employees have outdated criminal background checks. For years, parents asking to opt children out of LGBTQ-themed lessons were routinely denied, even as the district faced lawsuits and Supreme Court pressure.
After firing back at the inspector general who uncovered the background check mess, school leadership finally thanked her and admitted failure to keep up with safety screening. They claimed it’ll take months to finish needed checks.
The district backpedaled on keeping parents out of the curriculum loop, now pledging to send updates every nine weeks and offer the right to opt out. School leaders say this process is a significant burden, but so far, they haven’t shown any evidence to support that claim.
Internal records suggest the district focused more on countering religious-based objections than any logistics or disruption. Despite claims of classroom chaos with opt-outs, the Supreme Court said schools could easily make accommodations, pointing to success in other states and the district’s own past policies.
Meanwhile, other districts nationwide have made similar changes without fuss when parents organized and pushed back. The fight isn’t just legal; it’s about standing up for your family’s values.
If school leaders want trust, they need to be honest about what kids are exposed to. Families have every right to know and say no when lessons cross the line for their beliefs. Don’t wait for a court order—your voice matters now.
Wyatt Matters
This battle shows parents can still make a difference in protecting their kids when they speak up together. Our families deserve a seat at the table, and schools shouldn’t push beliefs that go against our values.

How, why would anyone or anything bend and support LGBTQ? I could understand if there were 100 million of them. Back in the 50’s and 60’s when I was in school they didn’t let on they were gay.
