January 1, US admits ‘mistake,’ Kabul drone strike killed 10 civilians
Gen. Kenneth F. McKenzie Jr. acknowledged Friday that the Aug. 29 drone strike in Kabul killed ten civilians, not ISIS-K, as the military initially claimed.
“It was a mistake and I offer my sincere apology,” McKenzie said at a press conference. “Clearly, our intelligence was wrong on this particular white Toyota.”
According to his brother Romal Ahmadi, the strike killed aid worker Zemari Ahmadi and nine family members, including seven children.
The airstrike was in response to the Aug. 26 ISIS bombing near the Kabul airport that killed 13 US service members and at least 169 Afghan citizens, which the Pentagon initially touted as a successful mission.
“The procedures were correctly followed and it was a righteous strike,” Gen. Mark Milley said after the strike.
