Wyatt’s Take

  • British officials allegedly withheld serious security warnings from the Prime Minister.
  • Peter Mandelson reportedly received clearance despite objections from vetting experts.
  • Questions are growing over who knew what, and when, inside government.

Prime Minister Keir Starmer now says he was never told that Peter Mandelson received security clearance against the advice of vetting experts. Mandelson has faced intense scrutiny over his past connections to Jeffrey Epstein.

Foreign Office officials reportedly withheld those details for months while Starmer defended the appointment in Parliament. He had previously told lawmakers that due process was followed, a statement he may now need to correct.

“Anger in No 10 tonight – am told by a source that neither the PM nor his advisors were told, over a series of months, that Mandelson had been granted security clearance against the recommendation of UK security vetting.”

The fallout has already led to the firing of Olly Robbins, a senior department official who lost the government’s confidence. Officials are now trying to establish how the vetting process was overridden.

Under British rules, ministers only face punishment if they knowingly mislead the government. Allies of the Prime Minister are arguing he is innocent because his staff did not give him the full picture before he spoke publicly.
