Broadcasting legend and renowned liberal Phil Donahue, known for his eponymous talk show that shifted TV norms, has passed away at 88 years old.

At his time of death, Donahue was surrounded by his second wife of 44 years, Marlo Thomas, a former actress, and his children and grandchildren. The Ohio-born Donahue, a graduate of Notre Dame, began his broadcasting career at KYW-AM TV before moving on to WABJ and WHIO-AM-TV. His career took a significant leap in the late 1960s when he hosted a morning interview program in Dayton, with his first guest being infamous atheist Madalyn Murray O’Hair.

Soon, Donahue was weaving into his show contentious and liberal-leaning topics including premarital sex, homosexuality, social issues, and political perspectives, revolutionizing the talk show format. His show’s move to WGN-TV in 1974 led to its renaming as “Donahue.” Newsweek once suggested that Donahue’s ideal guest might comprise an interracial lesbian couple who’ve had a child via artificial insemination.

The left-leaning Donahue was known for introducing risqué and sensational topics to mainstream television, inspiring other shows to push boundaries even further. However, his approach led to diminishing returns as his majority female audience drifted towards other hosts like Oprah Winfrey by 1996. Donahue never apologized for his sensational method of securing ‘hot’ guests or for airing controversial topics during family viewing hours, needless to say, his approach has defined TV talk shows since then.

Donahue, ever the critic of conservative politics, lambasted journalists who didn’t challenge President Ronald Reagan. He once brazenly quipped, “Ronald Reagan, he’s our man, he can fight the Commies if anybody can.” His political activism continued later into his life, where in 2013, he protested at the opening of the George W. Bush Presidential Library.

Donahue’s legacy could be seen as a testament to the liberal shift in media, which has often been accused of focusing more on ratings and sensationalism rather than maintaining journalistic integrity, a trend he arguably set rolling. His influence on the industry, for better or worse, is undeniable.
