President Trump signed an executive order putting a 25 percent tariff on imported semiconductors that don’t stay in America.
The order follows a Section 232 trade investigation into foreign chip imports.
Semiconductors shipped into the U.S. but then sent out again face the new tax.
White House staff secretary Will Scharf explained,
“The chips that are ‘transshipped through the United States to other foreign countries, would be subject to that 25 percent tariff.”
Another order signed by the president will kickstart a plan to shore up America’s supply chain for key minerals and products.
