Wyatt’s Take

  • President Trump declared a public safety emergency in Washington, D.C. and put the National Guard on the streets.
  • Control of the DC police was moved to the federal level for up to 48 hours, with lawmakers considering an even longer takeover.
  • Top Republicans in Congress praise the move as a tough step to crack down on crime and restore order in the capital.

President Trump has ordered the National Guard into Washington, D.C. and taken control of the local police department. He says this bold action is needed to stop crime and put law and order back in America’s capital.

The House Oversight Committee quickly called on Mayor Muriel Bowser and other city leaders to testify about crime in D.C. When lawmakers return from break, they’ll be pressed to explain what’s being done about public safety in the city.

“Protecting all Americans and tackling crime are core conservative policy priorities, and today’s actions by the Trump administration mark another promise kept,” said Rep. James Comer.

Trump cited violent gangs and unruly mobs as reasons for his actions during a news conference at the White House. He promised that lawlessness would not be tolerated any longer.

Violent crime numbers are reportedly dropping this year compared to last, but concerns about safety remain high. Assaults and homicides are both down, according to the police.

If Trump wants to keep control of the D.C. police for more than 48 hours, he needs special approval from Congress. With notice to key committees, he can manage the force for up to 30 days, but any longer requires a formal resolution from both the House and Senate.

Stay tuned to see how Congress and D.C. leaders respond to this new step in the fight against crime.
