Wyatt’s Take

  • Actress Milly Alcock says women in major franchises face scrutiny just for being there.
  • She admitted feeling nervous as the new Supergirl movie nears release.
  • Alcock said she knows critics will have strong opinions about the film.

Milly Alcock expects a tough crowd when the new DC superhero movie premieres this June.

After finding fame in a Game of Thrones spinoff, she says she is used to the intense spotlight on her life.

“It definitely made me aware that simply existing as a woman in that space is something that people comment on,” Alcock said about her career.

The Australian actress told reporters she is nervous about how the public will react to her taking on such a beloved character.

She noted that she feels a sense of dread as the release date gets closer.

“We have become very comfortable having this weird ownership of women’s bodies.”

Alcock claimed she struggled with unemployment for a year before landing this new role.

She decided to audition for the superhero part because she feared her acting career was already over at age 22.

“Of course I’m scared,” Alcock said.

“Of course, I want people to like me and the movie. But, ultimately, it’s out of my control.”

The film industry has seen a lot of pushback lately from fans who feel new movies are more about politics than good storytelling.

Alcock says she knows not every movie is for every person.

“Whenever a new wave comes along, there’s going to be criticism towards it,” she said.

“The beauty of art is that you can be selective about your taste.”

Wyatt Matters

Middle Americans want entertainment that stands on its own without being wrapped in excuses before the movie even opens. When Hollywood starts lecturing audiences instead of winning them over, it shows just how disconnected the industry has become.
