January 1, Senate Approves Spending, Shutdown Hits Anyway

Wyatt’s Take
- Senate passes spending package for most government departments.
- Department of Homeland Security only funded for two more weeks.
- Partial government shutdown still set for the weekend.
The Senate passed a major budget deal late Friday. While most of the government is funded through September, Homeland Security got only a two-week extension.
Lawmakers voted 71-29. The bill isn’t final yet because the House must approve changes next week, which means a partial shutdown will happen over the weekend.
Five departments—Defense, Transportation, Housing and Urban Development, Health and Human Services, Labor and Education—are fully funded for the year. Only the Department of Homeland Security depends on a short-term fix until February 13.
Washington’s choices mean families and workers are left hanging while they argue over final deals. Congress again waited until the last minute, while everyday Americans pay the price.
Wyatt Matters
When Congress drags its feet, working folks feel the pain first. They deserve reliable leadership that puts their needs above DC drama.
