Two Republican governors are pushing back hard against a Trump administration rule that would force states with new nuclear sites to accept spent fuel from other reactors.

The move has sparked concern in statehouses where leaders say the plan puts local water supplies and communities at risk.

Republican Gov. Brad Little told the Idaho Capital Sun in an interview published Friday that disposing of spent fuel over the state’s main aquifer is “a nonstarter.”

Republican West Virginia Gov. Patrick Morrisey also raised objections, warning that his state would not become a dumping ground for nuclear waste from other parts of the country.

Both governors argue that their states should not be forced to take on long-term risks tied to nuclear storage just to host new federal facilities.

Critics of the federal condition say it places unfair burdens on states that already face complex environmental and safety challenges.

Supporters of the Trump administration’s nuclear expansion goals argue that new reactor campuses will create jobs and strengthen energy independence.

State leaders, however, insist that any nuclear push must come with clear protections for local resources and communities.
