January 1, Popular HGTV Show Nightmare: Newlyweds Sue for Shaddy Reno

HGTV and its popular series Property Brothers, starring identical twins Jonathan and Drew Scott, are facing serious backlash. A Las Vegas couple sued the show’s production company, Cineflix, for alleged poor work during their home renovation.
Newlyweds Paul and Mindy King decided to invest their honeymoon savings into remodeling their home with the help of the Scott brothers. The couple handed over $200,000, expecting their dream home in return. However, they now find themselves in a legal battle with Cineflix and the subcontractors hired for the project.
“They’re making their millions of dollars. Their fame. They’re living their lifestyle based off of people like us, that put our trust into them,” said Mindy in an interview.
According to the Kings’ lawsuit filed in January 2021, Cineflix was not licensed in Nevada. They allegedly hired unqualified contractors and subcontractors who violated several building codes. Describing their situation as a “David versus Goliath” battle, the Kings refuse to back down.
“Our house looks good when you walk in because they built a TV set,” the Kings said. But, they claim that underneath the surface, their home is “dangerous.”
Mindy told about various issues they’ve encountered, including a leaking sink, an inoperable kitchen range due to an incorrect gas line, and their dishwasher becoming a biohazard. “It was actually deemed a biohazard and removed by a hazmat company over the summer,” she shared.
Due to these ongoing problems, the Kings’ home is subject to Chapter 40. This prevents them from selling the property until the issues are resolved. “We can’t sell a house where there are all these deficiencies and not to code. We can’t sell it, but if we could, we would take a huge financial hit,” Paul explained.
The couple expressed disappointment in the lack of communication and support from the Property Brothers. “We didn’t have a honeymoon. I didn’t get a wedding band. We took our savings because we trusted Jonathan and Drew,” Mindy said. “Again Jonathan and Drew, where are you? Why are you not helping us?”
While Cineflix is currently the only defendant listed, the Kings are considering adding the Scott brothers to the lawsuit. A jury trial is scheduled for October 2024.
