January 1, Minnesota Senator Arrested: Career at Risk, Democratic Majority in Danger

Minnesota state Sen. Nicole Mitchell (D) was arrested Monday on charges of first-degree burglary. This crime could result in up to 20 years in prison and a fine of up to $35,000 for an average citizen.

This arrest could jeopardize her career and the Democratic majority in the Minnesota Senate, where the party holds a slim one-seat advantage.

Mitchell, a former Minnesota Public Radio meteorologist and lieutenant colonel in the Air National Guard, allegedly broke into her estranged stepmother’s home in Detroit Lakes. She was reportedly intending to steal human remains.

Police were called around 4:45 a.m. Monday to report “an active burglary in process.”

The criminal complaint revealed that Mitchell was discovered in the basement of the house, wearing all black clothing and a black hat. Investigators believe she entered the home in search of her recently deceased father’s belongings and remains.

Inside Mitchell’s black backpack, police found a pair of laptops, a cell phone, various documents, and a Senate ID. Mitchell claimed one of the laptops was gifted to her by her stepmother, which the victim denied.

Republican Senate Minority Leader Mark Johnson said in a statement, “Knowing very few details at this time, I am shocked by the news of Sen. Nicole Mitchell’s arrest for first-degree burglary.” He added that “the public expects Legislators to meet a high standard of conduct.”

Sources told KSTP that Republican state Senate leaders are considering calling for Mitchell’s resignation. The Minnesota Senate Democratic Caucus reportedly has “no comment pending further information.”

State Senate Majority Leader Erin Murphy stated, “The allegations against Senator Mitchell are upsetting, for me and for anyone who has gotten to know and work with her.” She also noted that Mitchell has the right to a full defense in court and will need to have “serious and difficult conversations with her colleagues, constituents, and family.”

Mitchell was elected to the Senate in 2022 and will remain in office until 2027, barring removal or resignation.

Have you lost your mind?? Arresting a thief only sustains democracy it does not destroy it. She is a criminal; she has no respect for the law Nicole should not be a senator. She also obviously is “one brick SHY OF A LOAD” HER ONLY MINORITY STATUS IS THAT SHE IS A DISHONESAT WOMAN WHO DOES NOT BELONG IN A POSITION OF PUBLIC TRUST!! I AM PERSONALLY OFENDED AND WOULD THROW HER ASS IN JAIL AND GET HER SOME MENTAL HELP BECAUSE SHE IS NOT RIGHT IN THE HEAD!!!

Innocent until proven guilty! Even if she is guilty doesn’t mean that she will ever have to leave Congress! It’s a different set of rules for Congress! The Democrats won’t lift a finger to persecute anyone guilty! Dems have kept Mayorkas doing what he has always done! Leaving the Border open be cause he can !

For Democrats, getting arrested is a badge of honor. Just like that guy in DC that got busted for drugs years ago. He got re-elected! The people actually re-elected him. So, yeah, this woman will get re-elected. No problem.
