January 1, Legislation Would Expand Concealed Carry for Elite Military Personnel

Wyatt’s Take

  • Representative Pat Harrigan introduced a bill to let active-duty and retired special operators carry concealed weapons nationwide.
  • The measure would give elite service members the same federal recognition currently available to retired law enforcement officers.
  • The bill would also remove the need for annual firearms requalification for those who qualify.

Representative Harrigan, a former Green Beret, says the current system is illogical.

"Federal law already trusts retired police officers to carry concealed nationwide," Harrigan said in a statement.

"But it makes no sense that a retired SEAL or Green Beret, someone who spent a career mastering firearms under the most demanding conditions in the world, has no equivalent recognition under federal law."

The Special Operations Forces Concealed Carry Act would cover elite members of the Army, Navy, Marine Corps, and Air Force.

It mirrors the Law Enforcement Officers Safety Act of 2004, which opened the door for police to carry in all 50 states.

"This bill fixes that," Harrigan stated.

"It does not create new rights or weaken any safeguard."

Nearly 23 million Americans already hold concealed carry permits across the nation.

This move would ensure the most highly trained protectors in the country are not hindered by a patchwork of state laws.
