Wyatt’s Take

  • Zohran Mamdani’s new plan ties city spending to racial equity goals across 45 agencies.
  • The Justice Department is reviewing whether the proposal violates civil rights law.
  • Critics say the policy directs resources by race instead of treating all New Yorkers equally.

New York City’s socialist mayor just rolled out a plan that puts race at the center of how the city spends your tax dollars. Zohran Mamdani claims this ‘racial equity’ framework is needed to fix old wrongs by focusing specifically on certain groups.

The federal government is already crying foul on this divisive strategy. A top official at the Department of Justice says the plan looks illegal and has officially put the city on notice for a civil rights review.

Mamdani argued during his press conference that the city’s affordability crisis is tied directly to institutional neglect of specific minorities.

This Preliminary Racial Equity plan is the first step in developing a whole-of-government approach to tackling that reality, Mamdani said.

He claimed that over 200,000 black residents left the city over two decades because they were priced out of their own neighborhoods. He is now fast-tracking housing units and childcare specifically in majority-minority areas like Bed Stuy and the Bronx.

Assistant Attorney General Harmeet Dhillon did not mince words when she saw the proposal on social media.

Sounds fishy/illegal. Will review!

The plan was born out of 2022 voter referendums, but critics say using the law to pick winners and losers based on skin color is a flat-out violation of the Constitution. While the mayor talks about equity, the feds are looking at whether he is just practicing state-sponsored discrimination.

Wyatt Matters

Middle America knows that true fairness means treating every citizen the same under the law. When politicians start dividing us into boxes to hand out favors, they weaken the common standard that keeps the country united.
