  • New research links common plastic chemicals to major pregnancy and birth risks.
  • Phthalates such as DEHP and DINP were tied to millions of complications in a single year.
  • Several states in the heartland are still struggling with poor preterm birth ratings.

Researchers found a direct link between chemicals used in common plastics and a massive surge in premature births. Two specific types of phthalates, DEHP and DINP, were tied to millions of medical complications in a single year.

These substances are often called the everywhere chemical because they are hidden in plain sight. They show up in everything from nail polish and perfumes to plastic bottles and PVC pipes.

Dr. Leonardo Trasande, a lead author of the study, didn’t mince words about the findings.

“They are a dangerous class of chemicals,”

The situation at home is equally grim for many working-class families trying to start a life. Recent data shows that half of the United States received a grade of D or F regarding preterm birth rates.

States like Kentucky and Louisiana are seeing birth failure rates higher than 11 percent. Other heartland states including Missouri and Indiana are also struggling with low safety ratings for newborns.
