January 1, Denver Closes Migrant Shelters, Pleads Homeowners To Open Their Homes

Published

The city of Denver is closing several of its migrant shelters and has resorted to pleading with local property owners to house the “newcomers” in need of a place to stay. This move comes as Denver Mayor Mike Johnston recently announced the city’s plan to scale back its migrant services. The aim is to reduce the current budget deficit by nearly $60 million and reallocate those funds back into city services. This plan involves the closure of several shelters and the consolidation of the remaining ones.

Jon Ewing, a representative of Denver Human Services, revealed to Fox 31 that the city is exploring alternative ways to house its illegal immigrants. “We put out a feeler to all the landlords we have connections with,” Ewing said. “Basically said, listen, we’re going to have some newcomers who are going to need housing.”

The city has reportedly reached out to Denver rental property owners via email, asking if they would be interested in renting to migrants in need of housing. Ewing mentioned a rent cap of $2,000. This effort is backed by local non-profits that have already helped migrants find various forms of housing, leading to a significant decrease in the number of people in shelters.

“We’re at below 1,800 right now, which is the first time that number’s been that low since September,” Ewing said. This is a significant drop from the 4,500 people recorded as recently as January. Before, migrants were actively posting on social media in search of a home.

“A lot of those posts have now been replaced by, hey, I now need to furnish my apartment, what do I do? And so it’s a good problem to have when that’s what you’re running into,” Ewing said.

The city has managed to secure work permits for many of the migrants, enabling them to earn an income and pay for their accommodation. “1,300 people right now, over the last two weeks or so, that we’ve been able to help get their work permits,” Ewing said. “That’s a huge step.”

This move comes on the heels of a Massachusetts couple who, last month, volunteered to house illegal immigrants and were surprised when a family of four arrived at their doorstep less than an hour after signing up.

Earlier this year, Mayor Johnston predicted that the migrant crisis would cost the city around $180 million. He previously told Fox News that the city was “very close” to a breaking point due to the crisis and announced the city was cutting $5 million from public services while pinning the blame on Republicans and former President Donald Trump.

The city has supported 38,861 migrants from the southern border at a cost of nearly $58 million so far, Fox 31 reported. Venezuelans make up the vast majority of those that have arrived in the city since 2023, according to the Colorado Sun.

The sanctuary city has been struggling to stretch its limited resources to support the growing number of migrants there. Texas has transported thousands of migrants to sanctuary cities like Denver, to showcase the problems that border states face when migrants flood their cities.

The influx of migrants has also put the city’s health system at a breaking point with about 8,000 illegal immigrants recording about 20,000 visits to Denver Health last year, receiving services such as emergency room treatment, primary care, dental care and childbirth.

Denver passed laws to become a sanctuary city, but it doesn’t include a right-to-shelter provision, which means there is no official policy that compels the local government to provide shelter indefinitely.

Why It Matters (op-ed)

The city of Denver’s desperate plea to property owners to house migrants is a clear indication of the failures of liberal policies. By closing shelters and scaling back services, Mayor Johnston is putting the burden on private citizens.

This approach is unsustainable and jeopardizes the safety and stability of local communities. Encouraging landlords to rent to illegal immigrants with a rent cap of $2,000 is a slap in the face to hardworking, law-abiding citizens who struggle to afford housing themselves.

The city’s attempt to secure work permits for migrants only incentivizes more illegal immigration. Denver’s sanctuary city status has already strained its resources, and this move will only worsen the situation.

Another Demorat with TDS! The numbers crossing the border in one month were less that Crazy Joe has coming in in one day. These deranged individuals who insist that Goofy Joe is not to blame for the INVASION of this country should look at Bidens campaign speeches where he invited the migrants to come. His last proposal was to allow 5,ooo per day and to give him the option to close the border after that number was reached. That’s the reason that the sane Republicans refused to even debate it in the House. Too bad these people cannot think for themselves and can only parrot the party line!

Send them to Washington and have Biden house them in the White House. There’s a lot of room there they can just set up carts in the east room, and the foyer and the ballroom and all of the other rooms like the red room and green room in the blue room and also in the living quarters of Biden himself.

    This is a great idea!
The private sector should, or shouldn’t. The choice should be up to the individual, who would bear the cost. We don’t want government to decide how our money is spent. In a truly free society, the individual has a choice. Those who want to house immigrants can but shouldn’t force the rest to cover the costs. It’s not charity to give away other people’s money, that’s theft.

Why did your so called leader bring all these problems into America. We don’t need Illegals. The Democrats started this , so let the Democrats take care of them. Would you want someone into your house that you don’t know anything about?
What about criminals and deceased illegals .

Where are the migrants going to come up with $2000/mo? There should be no government assistance offered to illegal aliens that isn’t offered to American citizens first. No way. Not when we have American citizens that are unemployed, receiving government assistance, and are homeless. We’re obligated to our fellow citizen far before taking care of foreign citizens here illegally.

Rumors are floating around that the present US government wants to declare all illegal immigrants be granted US citizenship. Several states and cities are trying to pass legislation to allow illegals to vote in local elections.
