Wyatt’s Take

  • Sheridan Gorman, an 18-year-old Loyola University Chicago freshman, was killed while out with friends in Rogers Park.
  • Authorities say the suspect, a Venezuelan national, had previously been released by federal officials before the deadly shooting.
  • The case has reignited criticism of immigration enforcement, public safety, and failed coordination across agencies.

An 18-year-old girl is dead because federal authorities failed to keep a dangerous suspect off the streets. Sheridan Gorman was watching the Northern Lights with friends when the shooting happened in Chicago.

Federal officials confirmed that ICE has lodged a detainer against the suspect after the killing. The suspect had been released into the American interior in 2023 under current border protocols.

Gorman’s family spoke out against the system that failed their daughter, calling her death a preventable act. They noted that the consequences of failed border coordination are real and permanent.

“Sheridan was our daughter, our sister, and the heart of our family. She was full of life, full of kindness, and full of a love that she gave freely to everyone around her,” the family said.

The shooting happened at a beach pier in Rogers Park as the victim attempted to flee the attacker.

“We are gravely disappointed by the policies and failures that allowed this individual to remain in a position to commit this crime. When systems fail-whether through release decisions, lack of coordination, or unwillingness to act-the consequences are not abstract,” the family added.

High-ranking DHS officials are now calling on Illinois leadership to stop the cycle of releasing criminal aliens back into local neighborhoods. They argue that open border policies directly contributed to this tragedy.

Middle America values safe neighborhoods, accountable government, and borders that are actually enforced. Families should never have to fear that preventable failures will bring this kind of loss to their communities.
