Wyatt’s Take

  • The Colorado Communist Party tried showing off working-class skills, but the video backfired online.
  • Viewers pointed out simple mistakes like putting cabinet knobs and screws in backwards.
  • Polls show more Democrats favor socialism over capitalism nationwide.

The Colorado chapter of the American Communist Party posted a video in December showing members attempting basic construction work. The footage showed members struggling with tasks, like screwing in a cabinet screw backwards and installing a knob the wrong way—drawing laughs and criticism.

X user Matt Van Swol commented on the video, “screwing in [a] screw backwards.” Another user noted, “was putting the knob on the cabinet backwards.”

The party’s original post promoted the effort as gaining “hands-on construction experience” to help with affordable housing, criticizing inflated asset prices they say protect landlords and elites. Their video remained online as of Friday, but a viral clip from another account claimed the party deleted it after backlash.

Nationally, sentiment is shifting: just 42% of Democrats report a positive view of capitalism, while 66% look favorably at socialism, according to a September Gallup poll. Meanwhile, a 20-year-old Communist Party member, Hannah Shvets, recently won local office as a Democrat in Ithaca, New York.

The party did not provide comment regarding the video. Videos like this show the difference between real-world skills and online ideals.
