In a sobering revelation, more than 60,000 biometric portable gun safes are hitting the recall list after a 12-year-old boy tragically lost his life due to a firearm obtained from one of these flawed units, according to CBS News.

Fortress Safe, in conjunction with the US Consumer Product Safety Commission, broke the news on Thursday.

They’re recalling a swath of biometric gun safe models “due to a serious safety hazard and risk of death caused by a programming feature that can allow unauthorized access to the safes.”

The gravitas of the issue can’t be understated. The CPSC points to a gut-wrenching lawsuit that claims a 12-year-old boy’s life was snuffed out by a firearm that came from one of these recalled safes.

Even more alarming is the discovery that at least 39 reported incidents detail unauthorized access to these safes with fingerprints not recognized by the system.

The faulty products, identified in the CPSC press release, span a range of brands: Fortress, Legend Range & Field, Cabela’s, and Gettysburg.

These were widely sold from January 2019 through October 2023 at renowned retail giants like Bass Pro Shops, Dick’s Sporting Goods, Lowe’s, and prominent online platforms including Amazon and eBay.

For clarity, the recall pertains to models 11B20, 44B10, 44B10L, 44B20, 55B20, 55B30, 55B30G, 4BGGBP, and 55B30BP.

In light of the significant safety concern, owners are urgently advised to stop using the biometric features, strip the safe of its batteries, and rely solely on a key for security.

Fortress Safe stands ready to guide customers on disabling the compromised feature and offers a replacement safe, ensuring no extra burden on the consumer’s pocket.
