January 1, Music Feud Ignites as Famous Singer Faces Copyright Lawsuit Over Hit Song
In a bold move that’s caught the entertainment world’s attention, Tempo Music Investments has filed a lawsuit against pop sensation Miley Cyrus, accusing her of copyright infringement over her massively popular song, “Flowers.”
The lawsuit, as revealed by TMZ, alleges that Miley’s hit bears striking resemblances to Bruno Mars’ song “When I Was Your Man,” for which Tempo Music Investments claims partial copyright ownership. The accusation centers around “Flowers” allegedly copying the harmony, melody, and chorus of Mars’ song. Tempo Music Investments asserts that Miley’s track uses the same chord progressions and even mirrors some of Mars’ lyrics.
Court documents suggest that these similarities are not coincidences but instead a case of Miley “intentionally copying” Mars’ work, according to TMZ. Tempo Music insists Bruno Mars released his song a decade before “Flowers” hit the airwaves and points out that Cyrus won a Grammy Award in 2024 for her hit—an accolade Mars’ song secured long before “Flowers” saw the light of day.
The lawsuit charges that it’s indisputable “Flowers” would not exist without “When I Was Your Man,” given the “combination and number of similarities” between the two songs, TMZ reports. Tempo Music contends that Mars’ hit was widely available to Miley, her production team, and her label, making the infringement all the more egregious.
What’s more, Tempo Music is seeking a ruling to prevent Miley from performing or selling “Flowers,” plus they’re demanding financial compensation for the alleged infringement. Interestingly, despite being central to the complaint, Bruno Mars himself is reportedly not listed as a plaintiff in this legal battle.
So far, Miley Cyrus has remained silent on the matter, making no public statements through her social media platforms.
If this lawsuit unfolds unfavorably for Cyrus, it could mean more than just a financial hit—it could reshape how copyright laws are perceived and enforced in the music industry, sending a strong message about artistic integrity and originality. Let’s keep an eye on how this could impact not just Miley, but the broader landscape of popular music.
