  • A Tennessee mother faces serious charges after allegedly trying to drown one of her own children in a backyard pool while other kids watched in horror
  • Hero child ran inside to get help when the situation turned deadly — proving kids know wrong when they see it
  • The suspect refused to release the child even when another adult demanded it, forcing a physical intervention to save the victim

A 31-year-old Johnson City woman is behind bars this week after authorities say she attempted to drown one of her children in a backyard swimming pool. Mikaylee Rae Beirne was charged with aggravated child abuse and neglect following the July 15 incident, according to the Washington County Sheriff’s Office.

Washington County Sheriff Keith Sexton said deputies responded to a disturbance at a home on Cochran Road around 5 p.m. What they found was every parent’s nightmare.

Witnesses told deputies Beirne was in the backyard pool with multiple children while another adult was inside the home. According to investigators, one of the children ran inside to alert the adult that Beirne was allegedly forcing another child underwater.

The adult rushed to the pool and demanded that Beirne release the child, but she refused, authorities said. Think about that for a second — a grown woman holding a child under water and refusing to stop even when confronted.

The adult then pulled Beirne away and helped the child out of the water. Officials said another adult arrived at the home and briefly interacted with Beirne before deputies arrived.

Beirne left the scene before law enforcement responded. The children were taken inside the home while emergency personnel were called.

Authorities said the child suffered minor injuries and bruising. Deputies located Beirne a short time later and took her into custody.

She is being held at the Washington County Detention Center on a $50,000 bond.

Wyatt Matters

This story hits hard because it reminds us that evil doesn’t always come from strangers. Sometimes the people who are supposed to protect our kids are the very ones who harm them. That brave child who ran for help saved a life that day. We need to teach our kids to trust their instincts and speak up when something’s wrong — because adults don’t always do the right thing. And we need to make sure monsters like this face the full weight of the law.

Thank God that child was willing to get help for their sibling. Some children are afraid to do so.That Monster Mother sounds like she was drunk. Some people get absolutely crazy when drunk and don’t think logically at all. Almost like diabolical possession.

Does Tennessee have a child abuse law which requires adults who abuse children go to prison. Oklahoma passed one in 1963.
That adult deserves no less than prison for her attempt to drown that child. The child who ran inside was great and should receive a medal for helping the child whom the adult was attempting to drown.
