January 1, Maine Democrat Scandal Explodes — Voters Reveal Stunning Split

Wyatt’s Take

  • Maine Democratic Senate candidate Graham Platner is drowning in explosive allegations of abuse, Nazi tattoos, and sexual misconduct just days before the primary — and Democrat voters can’t decide if they even care.
  • Some Maine voters are standing by their scandal-ridden candidate, citing loyalty to his wife’s endorsement while dismissing reports of violent episodes, rape fantasies, and explicit texts to younger women.
  • This is the modern Democrat Party in a nutshell: values and character don’t matter as long as you toe the party line and promise to vote the right way in Washington.

A fresh wave of bombshell allegations has placed Maine Democratic Senate candidate Graham Platner squarely in the hot seat just days before Tuesday’s primary election. But when voters were asked about the mounting controversies, responses ranged from outrage to complete indifference.

“It’s not a good situation,” said Jeff from Waterloo, Maine, speaking outside a shopping plaza in Biddeford. He warned that choosing the “lowest common denominator” shouldn’t be the answer for Democrats looking to win.

“I am a conservative, but he’s just got so much baggage that I think if the Democrats want to have a winner, they’re going to have to find somebody else because he’s not the guy, just too much.”

Sheila from Harrison, Maine, said the scandals would “absolutely” influence her vote. She questioned Platner’s judgment and fitness for office in blunt terms.

“Anyone who’s representing our country or representing us in Congress needs to be held to a higher standard, and I don’t think he’s got any standards.”

The timing couldn’t be worse for Platner. Just days before Maine’s Democratic Senate primary, former girlfriends told The New York Times that the Marine Corps veteran engaged in heavy drinking, experienced violent episodes, and discussed rape fantasies — all allegations Platner has denied.

But the controversies don’t stop there. Platner has also faced criticism over reports that he sent sexually explicit messages to younger women, sported a Nazi-linked tattoo, and mocked a Purple Heart veteran online.

Yet not all voters seem concerned. When asked if Platner’s comments about women bothered her, Ellen from Acton, Maine, didn’t hesitate.

“When it comes to my vote, no.”

“I trust his wife. She knows him better than anybody. He is far from perfect. Most of this, my understanding, happened during a tough time in his life. The recent accusations, yes, they’re more recent, but again, I trust her to know who he is morally.”

“I do think that, as a representative of Maine, aside from what he may do in his marriage, he’s going to do a good job for me.”

Jane from Wells, Maine, was even more direct about her continued support.

“I still like him. Oh yes. I love him.”

Jessica from Biddeford, Maine, admitted she wasn’t following the Platner controversy at all, claiming she ignores the news because the media distracts people from “the issues that are important.”

“We’re better together as one instead of fighting each other over things that don’t matter.”

Platner will face David Costello on the ballot in Maine’s Democratic Senate primary on June 9. The winner will advance to challenge incumbent five-term Republican Sen. Susan Collins in November.

Why It Matters

This race is a perfect snapshot of how far the Democrat Party has fallen. Character, integrity, and personal conduct used to mean something in American politics. Now, for too many Democrat voters, none of that matters as long as the candidate checks the right boxes and votes the party line. Meanwhile, Senator Susan Collins has served Maine with dignity and professionalism for decades — and that’s the choice Maine families deserve come November.

I have never been very impressed with Susan Collins but I find it hard to believe anyone could vote for an idiot like Platner. Aren’t there any decent, honest people in Maine. Planter belongs in a mental institution not in our legislature.

To ellen, you are very ignorant. Yeah his wife knows best, but she’s also looking for the golden ticket as a senator‘s wife. The man is a piece of trash. He doesn’t respect women, and you being a woman should think twice about voting for that piece of garbage. Unless you’re in the rape and stuff. He is the lowest common denominator in this country. If he wins, it’s just proof that people in Maine are stupid.

Seriously, you have the nerve to make this comment? “The man is a piece of trash. He doesn’t respect women, and you being a woman should think twice about voting for that piece of garbage. Unless you’re in the rape and stuff. He is the lowest common denominator in this country. If he wins, it’s just proof that people in Maine are stupid.” Remove “Maine” and insert “in the United States” and then you have an accurate statement.

On the one hand, democrats have been calling Trump a nazi and hitler. On the other hand they support a nazi, hitler loving candidate like Pratner. Please, people of Maine, you want saints to walk the halls of congress in your name. But you keep voting for sinners to represent you. This typical of democrats as a whole. Dance with devil in order to gain power

Wow! You folks who just want a Democrat in office without any scrutiny? I am truly worried about the judgement of the women on both sides. I question women who don’t know that to stand behind a man who relates to women with disrespect is a vote to degrade any efforts women have made to be taken seriously. I agree with the woman who is asking what his wife is looking to gain by supporting him. Let him prove the allegations are false.
