January 1, Louisiana Republicans Push New District Map After Supreme Court Upholds Challenge

Wyatt’s Take
- Louisiana Republicans pass new congressional map in party-line vote after Supreme Court invalidated previous boundaries
- Democrats voted unanimously against the revised redistricting plan despite court order requiring changes
- Map now heads to state House where conservatives hold strong majority to finalize voting districts
Louisiana’s Republican-controlled Senate pushed through a new congressional map Thursday in a straight party-line vote. The 27-10 decision came just two weeks after the Supreme Court threw out the state’s previous district boundaries.
Every single Republican senator voted yes. Every Democrat voted no.

The high court’s ruling forced Louisiana lawmakers back to the drawing board on their congressional districts. Now the revised map moves to the state House, where Republicans also hold the majority.
The Supreme Court decision marked another chapter in the ongoing fight over how Louisiana’s congressional seats get divided up. The previous map had been challenged in federal court, leading to the justices stepping in.
Thursday’s Senate vote showed just how divided Louisiana’s legislature remains on redistricting. Not one Democrat crossed over to support the new boundaries, while Republicans stayed unified behind their plan.
The House will now take up the measure. With conservatives holding strong numbers there too, the map appears likely to clear its final hurdle and become law.
Louisiana isn’t alone in redrawing congressional lines after court interventions. Several states have faced similar legal challenges to their maps in recent years, with judges ordering changes to district boundaries.
Wyatt Matters
Americans deserve congressional districts drawn fairly and legally. When courts step in, lawmakers need to respect those rulings and move forward. Louisiana Republicans are doing exactly that — following the law and getting new maps in place so voters know where they stand come election time.
