January 1, Capitol Police Took 12 Minutes To Arrest Armed Staffer

The United States Capitol Police (USCP) said it took more time than initially believed to locate and arrest a staffer suspected of bringing a handgun into a House Office Building.

“After our review of the investigation and preliminary timeline — we discovered it took approximately four minutes to lock the building down and then approximately eight minutes until the suspect was stopped by officers,” the USCP said in a statement.

Authorities initially charged staffer Jeffrey Allsbrooks with possession of an unregistered firearm, but he now faces three additional charges.

Among the new charges is possession of unlicensed ammunition and possession of a “large capacity ammunition feeding device,” a gun magazine that holds more than 10 rounds.

The USCP put a statement shortly after the arrest, saying that officers noticed an image of a handgun in Allsbrooks’ bag on an X-ray screen, and he “was tracked down four minutes later and arrested.”

The incident sparked renewed scrutiny of the Capitol’s security flaws almost a year after the January 6 Capitol riot.

Allsbrooks, a logistics manager for the House Chief Administrative Office, pleaded not guilty in Virginia court on Friday.
