January 1, Infant Moments from Death as Floodwater Surges Toward Creek

Wyatt’s Take
- Body camera footage captures an officer charging through surging floodwaters to pull a baby from a trapped vehicle seconds before it’s swept into a Texas creek
- The driver ignored first responders trying to wave them off the flooded crossing — a reminder that common sense saves lives more than any government warning
- This rescue shows what real heroism looks like: local cops and firefighters risking their necks while bureaucrats debate climate policy
A baby is alive today because a Beeville, Texas police officer didn’t hesitate when floodwaters turned a routine crossing into a death trap. Body camera footage released Saturday shows the heart-stopping moment responders pulled an infant from a vehicle being swept toward a creek by raging water.
The incident unfolded about 100 miles southeast of San Antonio as heavy storms dumped rain across the region. Within minutes, a low-water crossing transformed from passable road to deadly current.
According to the Beeville Police Department, a fire chief tried to flag down the approaching vehicle, but the driver didn’t see the warning in time. The car entered the crossing and immediately became trapped as water surged around it.
“Recently, officers and firefighters responded after a vehicle drove into a flooded creek crossing and began getting pushed by the rushing water,” the department said in a Facebook post Saturday.
The footage shows water rising rapidly to the top of the vehicle’s wheels. An officer can be heard reporting that the current was pushing the car toward the creek.
Then came the terrifying realization: the driver screamed to a nearby officer that a baby was inside.
Without hesitation, the responding officer charged through the floodwaters, yanked open the door, and pulled out the carriage containing the infant. He carried the baby back to dry ground as another responder quickly covered the child with a jacket to shield against the continuing downpour.
“Thankfully, nobody was hurt,” police confirmed. The driver was also safely rescued from the vehicle.
Officials noted that the rain came down so fast there wasn’t time to set up barricades before the vehicle arrived at the crossing. That’s the reality of flash flooding in Texas — conditions change in seconds, not minutes.
“What may look passable one minute can quickly become dangerous the next,” the department warned.
“It does not take much moving water to push a vehicle off the roadway, and by the time you realize how dangerous it is, it can already be too late.”
The department stressed that drivers who go around barricades aren’t just risking lives — they’re committing a criminal offense.
“If barricades are up around a roadway or crossing, please do not drive around them. They are there for a reason. Going around barricades not only puts lives at risk, but it is also a criminal offense.”
Authorities urged drivers to slow down during heavy rain and avoid flooded areas, including creek crossings and low-lying roadways.
“No errand, shortcut, or destination is worth risking your life or your family’s safety,” police added.
Wyatt Matters
This is what protecting and serving actually looks like. Not speeches, not press conferences, not federal programs — just local first responders doing their jobs when it counts. These officers put themselves in danger because someone made a bad call at the worst possible moment. That baby’s life was saved by courage and quick thinking, not by bureaucracy. It’s a reminder that the people keeping us safe are the ones right here in our communities, not sitting in some office building in Washington.
