Wyatt’s Take

  • Millions who paid for TSA PreCheck can’t use it during shutdown
  • Security lines longer for everyone as special programs pause
  • Both parties blame each other for travel headaches

The government shutdown means over 20 million Americans who paid for TSA PreCheck must now wait in regular security lines at airports. The same goes for travelers who use Global Entry to speed up their entry when returning from abroad.

Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem said the move “was designed to prioritize the general pool of travelers.”

“Shutdowns have serious real world consequences,” Noem said. She added, “TSA and CBP are prioritizing the general traveling population at our airports and ports of entry and suspending courtesy and special privilege escorts.”

TSA PreCheck normally means quicker check-ins and less time in line. People using Global Entry can skip long customs checks. Both programs are suspended for now.

Democrats blame the Trump administration, saying the pause is political and meant to upset travelers. “TRUMP’S DHS IS PUNISHING TRAVELERS… They’re ruining your travel on purpose,” the Homeland Security Committee posted to X.

TSA, meanwhile, says Democrats are using the agency to push changes to immigration policy. Senior TSA official Adam Stahl said, “Democrats should fund the department and stop punishing our workforce and the everyday travelers they serve.” He warned a long shutdown could cause bigger issues like increased delays, longer waits, and even cancelled flights.

If you’re hoping for the fast lane at the airport, you’ll have to wait for Washington to solve its budget fight.
