  • Federal authorities are challenging claims against ICE after a tragic shooting in Dallas.
  • ICE agents face mounting attacks, sparking a heated political fight over law enforcement.
  • Criticism erupts over accusations involving a 5-year-old during an arrest.

A political firestorm is raging after an ICE field office in Dallas was attacked, leaving one detainee dead and another wounded. At the same time, federal officials are pushing back against accusations from Rep. Ilhan Omar and other Democrats that ICE agents used a 5-year-old autistic girl as bait to arrest her father in Massachusetts.

Rep. Omar shared a post on social media, saying, “This is vile and beyond cruel. Abolish ICE.” The post accused ICE of using the child to lure her father, who is an undocumented immigrant.

Tricia McLaughlin from the Department of Homeland Security called the story “a vile lie,” saying, “ICE agents NEVER used a 5-year-old girl as ‘bait.’” She claimed the child’s father abandoned her in a car, and officers rescued her and contacted police.

McLaughlin pointed out the suspect, Edwards Hip Mejia, had previous arrests and tried to escape officers by driving home and fleeing. She said, “The criminal illegal alien target … ABANDONED his own child in a car.” According to police, the girl was returned safely to her family, and Mejia was detained later.

Homeland Security officials stated attacks against ICE have jumped by 1,000%. In the Dallas incident, police say Joshua Jahn shot at the ICE building and a transport van, before taking his own life. One detainee was hospitalized in critical condition.

After the attack, McLaughlin asked for prayers for victims and condemned the violence against ICE. She wrote, “They get up every morning to try and make our communities safer.” She called for an end to the targeting of law enforcement.
