January 1, Costco Settles $2 Million Over Flushable Wipes Debacle: Learn How You Can Benefit

Costco is set to pay $2 million in a class action lawsuit settlement over their Kirkland Signature Moist Flushable Wipes. This payout will benefit customers who purchased the wipes between July 1, 2011, and May 31, 2017.

Despite not admitting any wrongdoing, Costco has agreed to resolve the false advertising lawsuit. The plaintiffs allege that flushing the wipes led to damage to pipes, septic systems, sewage lines, and other plumbing. They argue they wouldn’t have purchased the wipes if they were aware they weren’t actually flushable as advertised.

Class members can receive $1.30 per purchased product, with a minimum payment of $7.50 and a maximum payment of $55.90, which is equal to 43 products. No proof of purchase is required to receive payment, and the deadline to submit a valid claim is Aug. 9 on this website.

Alexander Kraus, a maintenance worker for Kenosha Water Utility, is skeptical of the term “flushable” wipe. He has experienced first-hand the issues they cause in sewers, as they cling onto deposits and tree roots, eventually leading to backups.

Kraus explains that most work to clear backups due to wipes involves flushing the pipe, which takes about an hour. However, it only serves as a temporary fix until the pipe clogs again. Sometimes, workers have to dig up and repair the sewer lateral for replacement, which takes a full eight-hour day.

Costco has not commented on the issue, but they are still selling flushable wipes. The packaging on their website advises customers to “Never flush more than one wipe at a time.”

Why are the lawyers getting all the money instead of the customers that spent hundreds with a plumber? My brother spent almost $500 getting his blockage repaired! Customer should be able to provide proof of repair to get reimbursed!

Costco wasn’t in the wrong, their wipes are just as flushable as any other brand of wipes, that people were unaware of the harm flushing anything, even stuff designed for that purpose, could harm or clog the system regardless, is more due to ignorance than any so-called product defect.

Have used these wipes for years. Just recently, those wipes broke a pump to a septic system where I am living, that wipe cost several hundred in plumbing fee & parts to replace the pump.
