  • Hall of Fame goalkeeper says U.S. squad faces ‘literally impossible’ odds despite hot start at home World Cup
  • Team riding high after record-breaking wins, but championship requires four perfect games against world’s elite
  • New tournament format gives America extra shot at glory — can momentum overcome the doubters?

American soccer icon Tim Howard just threw cold water on the patriotic fever sweeping the nation as Team USA dominates early rounds of the home World Cup. Despite crushing wins that have fans dreaming big, the Hall of Fame goalkeeper says championship glory remains out of reach.

“The U.S. cannot, unequivocally, win the World Cup,” Howard declared on his podcast alongside fellow national team legend Landon Donovan. “The U.S. will have to play the greatest game they’ve ever played…four games in a row. Round of 16, quarterfinals, semifinals, finals.”

“It’s literally impossible for the U.S. to win the World Cup. That’s just the reality.”

Donovan took a more optimistic view of America’s chances, though he acknowledged the massive challenge ahead.

“Can we? Yes. Has this group proven they can beat a top team? No,” Donovan countered. “If they play the way they’re playing, they can absolutely compete with any team in this World Cup. For sure.”

The debate comes as Team USA has steamrolled through Group D with statement victories. They put up a record-breaking four goals against Paraguay in their opener — the most ever scored by the American squad in a World Cup match. Then they followed up with a commanding shutout victory over Australia to punch their ticket to the knockout rounds.

Donovan believes coach Mauricio Pochettino’s squad is building the kind of momentum that could fuel an unexpected championship run.

“I’ve said this over and over. Can you do it four times in a row? Can you do it in the round of 16, the quarter, the semi, the final. That is where it gets really hard,” Donovan explained. “But momentum gets going, you never know.”

The squad faces Türkiye on Thursday in their final group stage match. While advancement is already secured, the result will determine their opponent in the newly expanded round of 32 — a format change that gives more teams a shot at glory.

The tournament expanded from 32 to 48 teams this year, adding an extra knockout round before the traditional round of 16. The top two teams from each group advance automatically, along with the top eight third-place finishers.

Despite the game having no impact on advancement, Pochettino will push his players to keep their foot on the gas and maintain the swagger they’ve shown through two dominant performances.

All eyes remain on superstar midfielder Christian Pulisic, who sat out the Australia match with a left calf injury. With knockout stage qualification locked up, Pochettino faces a strategic decision: rest his star player to ensure he’s fully healthy for elimination games, or keep him sharp with game action.

The American squad has already exceeded expectations and silenced early skeptics. Whether they can prove Howard wrong and make the Cinderella run all the way to hoisting the trophy remains the ultimate question for a team that’s shown it belongs on the world stage.

Wyatt Matters

Americans don’t give up just because the so-called experts say something can’t be done. This team is playing with heart and representing our country with pride on home soil. Win or lose, they’re showing up and fighting — something we can all respect. The doubters said we couldn’t compete at this level, and we’re already proving them wrong one game at a time.
