January 1, Rookie Makes CATASTROPHIC Mental Error That Hands Win to Texas

Wyatt’s Take
- Cleveland rookie Cooper Ingle threw the ball into the stands after catching what he thought was the third out — it was only the second.
- His brain fog allowed Texas to score the go-ahead run in a game the Guardians lost 4-2.
- The 24-year-old made his MLB debut just five days earlier and went 0-for-4 with three strikeouts in the loss.
Cleveland Guardians left fielder Cooper Ingle had a night to forget on Tuesday against the Texas Rangers. The rookie pieced together a mental mistake that will haunt him for quite some time.
The Guardians and Rangers were locked in a 2-2 tie in the bottom of the seventh inning. Texas had a runner on second with one out — and that’s the key detail here.
Texas batter Alejandro Osuna popped one to left field where Ingle made what should have been a routine catch for the second out of the inning. But Ingle seemed to think it was the third out and the inning was over.
So what did he do? He took the ball and tossed it into the stands at Progressive Field.
That catastrophic lapse in judgment allowed Rangers runner Ezequiel Duran to race home and give Texas the go-ahead run. The Rangers went on to win the game 4-2.
Ingle was 0-for-4 at the plate with three strikeouts on the night. Not exactly the kind of performance you want after a mental error like that.
The 24-year-old only made his major league debut last Friday against the Seattle Mariners. He came into the 2026 season ranked No. 99 on MLB’s list of the top 100 prospects in baseball and No. 65 on Baseball Prospectus’ list.
He was also No. 3 among Guardians prospects, so expectations were high for the young outfielder.
After the game, Ingle took full responsibility for the error and vowed it wouldn’t happen again.
“Obviously you feel terrible. It’s a pretty embarrassing feeling.”
With the result on Tuesday, each team now sits at 44-42 on the year.
Wyatt Matters
This is a lesson every young player learns the hard way — you have to stay locked in, every single pitch. Baseball has a way of humbling anyone who takes their eye off the ball, and that goes double for rookies trying to prove they belong. Ingle will bounce back, but this one’s going to sting for a while. That’s how you learn to never make the same mistake twice.
