  • Chi Ossé, a 27-year-old city councilman from Brooklyn, is filing to run against House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries in 2026.
  • This marks a push from younger far-left candidates against older Democrat politicians.
  • Jeffries’ team says he is focused on fighting Republicans in Washington.

A New York City councilman, who calls himself a democratic socialist, wants to take on top Democrat Hakeem Jeffries in the next congressional primary. Chi Ossé, who represents parts of Brooklyn, has filed the paperwork to kick off his campaign.

Ossé has served on the city council since 2021, representing neighborhoods like North Crown Heights and Bedford-Stuyvesant. His run is part of a bigger trend, as more young Democrats are trying to replace longtime party leaders.

“Jeffries is focused on battling Donald Trump, ending the Republican shutdown of the federal government and addressing the crushing GOP healthcare crisis,” said his spokesman, Justin Chermol.

Even with opposition from some fellow city Democrats, Ossé seems set to challenge the party establishment. His campaign joins other young Democrats taking on older names like Nancy Pelosi and Steve Cohen this cycle.

Big shifts could be coming to the Democratic Party if these challenges grow.
