January 1, Voters Push NASA for Reusable Rockets Strategy

Wyatt’s Take

  • 65% of voters want NASA to use modern, reusable rockets instead of disposable ones
  • Support for reusable rockets is highest among men and Republicans
  • Experts warn China views the moon as a strategic prize, not just a science experiment

A new poll shows most Americans want NASA to use reusable rockets over old-style throwaway models as the race with China to return to the moon heats up. Washington’s wasteful spending and slow-moving programs have folks fired up to see smarter, cheaper innovation drive our space future.

National security experts are sounding the alarm.

Steve Yates warned,

“China is not treating the moon as a scientific destination, rather they are treating it as strategic terrain. If Beijing occupies the lunar surface first, they won’t share access or play by international norms. They will move to lock up territory, resources and influence just as they have in the South China Sea.”

The poll, conducted by RMG Research for the Space Frontier Foundation, found only 21% want to stick with NASA’s old one-time use rockets, with 14% unsure. Republican voters showed the strongest support for reusables at 66%, while just 57% of Democrats agreed.

Most men (73%) backed reusable rockets compared to 58% of women.

This survey of 1,000 registered voters came as America’s push for a moon return picks up steam. NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman declared the U.S. will put boots back on the lunar surface before any rival can get there.

Isaacman spoke of setting up a long-term American presence to tap the moon’s resources and advantages.

China isn’t sitting idly by either, having run its own crewed lunar rocket tests this summer. The rivalry for space leadership is as much about keeping our future secure as it is about planting a flag.

Trump’s recent budget proposals call for cutting NASA’s expensive Artemis rocket program, which has burned through $65 billion and blown past original cost figures.

The huge costs for single-use rockets are causing many to question who should build our next rockets: government partners like Boeing, or nimble private companies offering better results for less money?

The vote was close, with 44% wanting private options and 41% for traditional partners.

Sean Mahoney, head of the Space Frontier Foundation, explained,

“Polling shows that taxpayers understand a program like the Space Launch System (SLS), built around one-time, disposable rockets costing approximately $4.2 billion per launch, is not a sustainable way for NASA to expand operations on the lunar surface, let alone establish a long-term human presence beyond Earth.”

President Trump also ordered feds to make it easier for industry to guide America into the future of space business, pointing out that needless red tape slows progress and helps adversaries catch up.

According to Chad Wolf,

“The latest polling confirms what strategic leaders and Members of Congress have long known: Americans deserve a space program that delivers results faster, at lower costs and keeps us ahead of China in a new era of global competition.”

Wolf warns that sticking with outdated technology will let Beijing take the lead. Modern competition and commercial partnerships are key if NASA wants to keep up and win this new space race.

Middle America understands that making smart investments, cutting waste, and chasing innovation is what keeps our country safe and strong. Keeping watch on spending and demanding results just makes sense for families who know what it’s like to stretch a dollar and expect accountability in every part of government.

People in Middle America know a good deal from a bad one. Space should be about real progress, not government waste.

If NASA salvaged 40% of what was sent into space, could you imagine the money that could be saved, used again to better understand The World and space we exist within?
