Wyatt’s Take

  • President Trump issues stern warning to Colombia’s leader.
  • The U.S. is pressing Colombia to fight drug trafficking harder.
  • Treasury sanctions already put pressure on Colombia’s government.

President Trump told reporters that Colombian President Gustavo Petro could be the next target in the U.S. drug-trafficking fight if he doesn’t shape up. The Trump administration called Petro an “illegal drug trader” after Petro appeared at a pro-Palestinian event in New York and told U.S. soldiers to defy orders.

Trump’s main focus has been on drugs coming from Venezuela, but he’s warned that strikes could expand to Mexico or Colombia.

“Colombia is producing a lot of drugs,” Trump said. “So [Petro] better wise up or he’ll be next. He’ll be next soon. I hope he’s listening, he’s going to be next.”

Petro may leave office soon due to term limits, so Trump might not have to act if things calm down. The Treasury has hit Petro and his family with sanctions under an order aimed at drug traffickers. Colombia is the world’s top cocaine producer, with much of it ending up with Mexican cartels.

Stay tuned for updates as this story unfolds and let us know how you think America should respond to foreign leaders tied to the drug trade.
