  • Trump aims to end an Obama-era climate rule.
  • EPA says it will be the largest deregulation act in U.S. history.
  • Repeal removes federal greenhouse gas rules for cars, not power plants.

President Trump is ready to scrap a climate rule that allowed the federal government to limit greenhouse gases. This rule was put in place during the Obama years and let federal agencies regulate emissions from things like cars.

EPA Administrator Lee Zeldin said the change will be “the largest act of deregulation in the history of the United States.”

Getting rid of the rule means no more federal rules making car makers measure and report greenhouse gas emissions. This won’t affect power plants, which are still covered by different rules.

An EPA spokesperson said past administrations used this rule to “justify trillions of dollars of greenhouse gas regulations covering new vehicles and engines.”

Last month, a court found the Department of Energy broke the law when it started a climate panel without open meetings. Environmental groups who are against fossil fuels had sued, worried the panel might help cancel these climate rules.

The American Petroleum Institute says it’s fine to repeal the rule for vehicles but wants it kept for power plants to keep methane rules on oil and gas companies.
