Wyatt’s Take

  • The Supreme Court says Texas can use its new map for 2026 elections.
  • This could mean more seats for Republicans in Congress.
  • Court found the lower tribunal made mistakes in challenging the map.

The Supreme Court handed Texas a win, allowing the state to use its new congressional map for the 2026 midterm elections. The court sided with Republicans, likely helping them gain extra seats in Congress from this red state.

The ruling came after a lower court said the map was probably unconstitutional due to racial gerrymandering, but Justice Samuel Alito had already put that decision on hold last month.

The Supreme Court said Texas is likely right, stating that the lower court made

“at least two serious errors.”

One issue was that the court

“failed to honor the presumption of legislative good faith by construing ambiguous direct and circumstantial evidence against the legislature.”

Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton praised the decision as a victory for the state’s right to draw its own lines.

“In the face of Democrats’ attempt to abuse the judicial system to steal the U.S. House, I have defended Texas’s fundamental right to draw a map that ensures we are represented by Republicans,” he said.

“Texas is paving the way as we take our country back, district by district, state by state. This map reflects the political climate of our state.”

Redistricting fights are heating up across the country, with Republican leaders working to secure new seats and some Democrat-run states like California redrawing their own lines in response.
