January 1, Spy Letter Tied Trump To Russia, Then Biden

Wyatt’s Take

  • Political insiders used their power to shape election narratives.
  • Same ex-spies who pushed Russia conspiracies helped shield Hunter Biden.
  • Washington elites never pay a price for misleading the American people.

There’s a pattern in Washington—political insiders and intelligence folks stick together, putting spin above truth when it suits their side. The same man, former CIA boss Mike Morell, who got 51 former intel officials to sign a letter calling the Hunter Biden laptop Russian “disinformation,” pulled a similar stunt back in 2016. Morell worked to connect Donald Trump to Vladimir Putin for Hillary Clinton’s team, pushing claims the campaign used to discredit Trump all summer and fall.

Morell wasn’t acting alone. He got dozens of former spy leaders to sign a letter pushing the idea that Trump was too close to Russia. Many in the Clinton camp openly admitted they sought out “credible national security voices” like Morell to validate their messaging after their party’s convention. A campaign chief even said she was “surprised by the enthusiasm with which some, such as former acting CIA director Michael Morell, jumped into the fray.”

Clinton proudly pointed to Morell’s shocking op-ed in the New York Times, where he claimed Trump was “not only unqualified for the job, but he may well pose a threat to our national security.” Morell described Putin as having “recruited” Trump as an “unwitting agent of the Russian Federation.” Clinton’s book says the op-ed was like pulling the fire alarm, but laments that the media didn’t leap on it hard enough.

Even after two big investigations found zero proof Trump was a Russian agent, the idea stuck around thanks to that early push. The campaign hammered Morell’s line up to Election Day, with top officials and party leaders repeating it often. Harry Reid, then the top Democrat in the Senate, even cited Morell’s opinion in a letter to the FBI trying to launch a bigger inquiry into Trump’s supposed Kremlin ties.

The whole smear campaign went beyond statements. Millions got spent on hiring people like British ex-spy Christopher Steele to create the now-debunked dossier laying out bizarre Russia accusations. Clinton’s circle coordinated with legal and policy hands to fan the Russia flames at every chance.

By late 2016, when leaks started claiming the CIA believed Russia wanted Trump to win, Morell seized the moment. He called the so-called meddling “the political equivalent of 9/11.” That wild claim spread fast, firing up cable news and frightened Democrats. But those reports were based on leaks, not official conclusions—yet they shaped public opinion anyway. The insiders knew exactly what they were doing.

Fast forward four years: Morell and his buddies repeated the playbook. He coordinated the Hunter Biden “laptop letter” right before the 2020 election, giving Biden a new talking point to use against Trump at the debate. Morell later admitted to Congress he wrote that letter to “help Joe Biden win the election.” The Biden campaign even called to thank Morell for his timely political assist.

Republican leaders say these kinds of acts are a direct threat to fair elections. President Trump has moved to revoke clearances from everyone who signed the laptop letter, calling out how they “weaponized the gravitas of the Intelligence Community to manipulate the political process and undermine our democratic institutions.” But, like always, the same closed circle faces no real punishment.

It’s the working folks and honest voters who pay the price when government insiders and media “experts” team up to steer the news. These are the same people lecturing us on democracy, yet they have no problem lying to the public when it suits their goals. In Middle America, we know a rigged game when we see one.

Wyatt Matters

The old boys’ network in D.C. keeps making up smears to protect itself and hurt Middle America’s champions. We can’t let the elites in Washington decide what’s true and what’s fake whenever it fits their agenda. Real accountability means standing up for honest elections and never letting the powerful cover for each other’s dirty tricks.
