January 1, Single Democrat Decision Triggers CRISIS Across Virginia

Wyatt’s Take

  • Virginia Democrats went all-in on electric vehicle mandates, and now the whole state’s paying the price with power grid warnings and skyrocketing costs
  • Working families are getting hit with billion-dollar bills while wealthy liberals pat themselves on the back for ‘saving the planet’
  • When the lights go out and your electric bill doubles, remember which party thought government knows better than you

Virginia’s Democrat-controlled government is facing a growing backlash as their aggressive push for electric vehicles threatens to overwhelm the state’s power grid and stick ratepayers with massive bills. The chickens are coming home to roost on their green energy fantasy.

Democrats rammed through California-style EV mandates that require most new vehicles sold to be electric by 2035. Now utility companies are warning the grid can’t handle it, and guess who’s going to pay for the upgrades? You are.

“The costs are staggering,” one energy analyst told reporters. “We’re talking billions in infrastructure improvements that will be passed directly to consumers.”

Dominion Energy has already proposed rate hikes to cover the estimated $10 billion needed to beef up Virginia’s electrical infrastructure. That’s real money coming out of hardworking families’ pockets because Democrats decided to play climate warrior with other people’s money.

The irony is rich. Democrats sold this as helping working people, but blue-collar Virginians who can’t afford $60,000 electric cars are the ones who’ll be subsidizing charging stations and grid upgrades for wealthy liberals in Northern Virginia.

“This is a regressive tax in everything but name,” said one Republican state delegate. “Working families will pay more for electricity while rich Democrats drive around feeling good about themselves.”

The power grid warnings are getting serious too. Utility officials have cautioned that if EV adoption follows the Democrat-mandated timeline, Virginia could face rolling blackouts during peak demand periods. Nothing says “progress” like 1970s-style power failures.

Democrats controlled the governorship and both chambers of the legislature when they passed these mandates. They own this completely. No Republicans, no scapegoats, just one-party rule and the consequences that come with it.

The timing couldn’t be worse for Virginia Democrats. Governor Glenn Youngkin has been highlighting exactly these kinds of government overreach issues, and voters are taking notice. When your electric bill jumps 30% because of someone else’s environmental virtue signaling, you remember at the ballot box.

“Virginians didn’t ask for California’s failed policies,” Youngkin said at a recent event. “They want affordable, reliable energy, not blackouts and rate hikes.”

What makes this even more galling is that Democrats knew this was coming. Energy experts warned them during the legislative process that the grid couldn’t handle rapid EV adoption without massive investment. Democrats didn’t care. They wanted the press release and the environmental group endorsements.

Now those same Democrats are scrambling to figure out how to pay for their green dreams without getting thrown out of office. Some are quietly suggesting spreading the costs out over decades, which is politician-speak for “let’s hide how much this really costs.”

The policy also puts Virginia at a competitive disadvantage. Neighboring states without these mandates will have lower electricity costs and more reliable power. Businesses looking to expand or relocate will do the math, and Virginia loses.

For families already struggling with Biden-era inflation, an electric bill increase of hundreds of dollars per year could be the breaking point. Democrats in Richmond don’t seem to grasp that not everyone can absorb these costs as easily as their donor class.

The whole debacle shows what happens when ideology trumps common sense. Electric vehicles might have a place in America’s future, but mandating them before the infrastructure exists is putting the cart before the horse — or the EV before the power plant.

“This is central planning at its worst,” noted one conservative policy expert. “Government mandating outcomes without considering real-world constraints.”

Virginia Republicans are already making this a centerpiece of their messaging heading into future elections. It’s a gift-wrapped issue: Democrats raised your costs, threatened your power reliability, and did it all for a policy most Virginians never asked for.

The Democrat response has been predictable deflection. They blame utility companies, they blame inflation, they blame everything except their own shortsighted mandate. But voters aren’t stupid. They know who passed the law.

Some Democrats are now trying to distance themselves from the policy they voted for, suddenly discovering concerns about costs and grid reliability. That kind of political cowardice doesn’t go unnoticed by constituents who remember the self-righteous speeches about climate change when the bill passed.

The situation in Virginia is a warning to other states considering similar mandates. Good intentions don’t keep the lights on, and environmental rhetoric doesn’t pay the electric bill. Voters will hold politicians accountable for policies that hit them in the wallet.

Wyatt Matters

This is what happens when politicians care more about impressing environmental activists than serving working families. Virginians are about to learn an expensive lesson about one-party control and government overreach. When your power bill arrives and you see that extra charge for green mandates you never voted for, remember which party thought they knew better than you how to live your life.
