January 1, Sesame Street debuts first Asian-American puppet
The long-running children’s show Sesame Street debuted its first Asian-American character, Ji-Young.
“I feel like I have a lot of weight that maybe I’m putting on myself to teach these lessons and to be this representative that I did not have as a kid,” said Kathleen Kim, Ji-Young’s puppeteer.
Ji-Young will be officially part of the crew, starting with See Us Coming Together: A Sesame Street Special, debuting Thanksgiving Day on HBO Max.
