Wyatt’s Take

  • The Senate couldn’t get enough votes to pass a short-term funding bill.
  • Government shutdown drags on with no clear end in sight.
  • Some Democrats and Independents sided with Republicans this round.

The Senate failed for the eighth time to move forward with a bill that would fund the government until November 21. They needed 60 votes, but only got 49 yes and 45 no.

Two senators, Catherine Cortez Masto (D-NV) and Angus King (I-ME), joined Republicans, while Kentucky’s Rand Paul (R) voted no.

Several senators didn’t vote, including Bill Cassidy, Tammy Duckworth, Bill Hagerty, Mitch McConnell, John Fetterman, and Thom Tillis. John Thune voted no so he could bring the bill up again later.

It’s not clear when another vote will happen. The government shutdown started earlier this month after both parties’ plans stalled out in the Senate.

Americans are left wondering when lawmakers will get their act together to find real solutions.
