A woman walking home near Forsyth Park in Savannah was attacked with a corrosive chemical late Wednesday. Police say the suspect approached Ashley Wasielewski around 8:15 p.m. and threw the substance in her face before fleeing the scene.
Her clothes and car keys were found melted, and neighbors heard her screams. Paramedics took Wasielewski to a burn center where she is expected to remain for at least a week due to the seriousness of her injuries.
“This kind of violence has no place in Savannah.”
Her son described the trauma, saying she faces many surgeries and therapy to recover. Law enforcement officials report they have identified a person of interest but have not made any arrests.
Police assure people the area is being patrolled and there is no ongoing threat. They urge anyone with photos or information from that night to come forward, noting even the smallest clue could help the investigation.
Fundraising has started to help Wasielewski’s recovery.
