A massive explosion at a Texas oil refinery sent smoke towering over Port Arthur on Monday night. This facility is a lifeline for our energy independence and local jobs.

Jefferson County Sheriff Zena Stephens confirmed she is monitoring the air quality while emergency crews work the scene. No injuries have been reported among the roughly 770 workers employed at the plant.

“We don’t have units at the scene, currently, they’re rolling there now. The type of incident is unknown at this time,” said Antonio Mitchell of the Port Arthur Fire Department.

The facility processes 435,000 barrels of crude daily into gasoline and diesel. It sits about 90 miles east of Houston and remains a critical piece of the Gulf Coast energy sector.

Transportation officials are telling regular folks to stay off the roads near the industrial site. The cause of the blast is still under investigation while crews fight to contain the blaze.
