Wyatt’s Take

  • Patriots deliver tough, gritty playoff win at home.
  • Staunch defense gave Chargers few chances to score.
  • New England moves forward in the postseason hunt.

The New England Patriots took care of business at home, shutting down the Los Angeles Chargers 16-3 in a defensive-heavy Wild Card faceoff. This marks their first playoff win since their 2018 Super Bowl run, and now they await the winner of the Texans and Steelers showdown.

No touchdowns showed up on the scoreboard until late, a testament to both teams’ fierce defenses, but the Patriots kept the Chargers’ offense in check all game. Justin Herbert and his squad had no answers for the pressure New England brought to Foxborough.

Despite an early turnover near their own end zone, the Patriots’ defense stayed tough and refused to break. They forced the Chargers to turn the ball over on downs and built a lead through long, steady drives capped off by field goals.

The Chargers tried to push back before halftime but found themselves stuffed at the goal line and settled for a field goal to tie things up. Before heading to the locker room, a steady Patriots drive rebuilt a slim lead, showing they could grind it out the hard way.

Maye was strip-sacked as Los Angeles desperately tried to get something going, but the Patriots’ defense kept the pressure high, never letting the Chargers tie it up. Another field goal extended the lead, leaving LA further behind.

The play that sealed the win came when Maye hit Hunter Henry on a 28-yard touchdown, with the former Charger finding paydirt to the cheers of the home crowd. That score left Los Angeles reeling and with fading hopes.

Patriots defenders wouldn’t let up, with K’Lavon Chaisson forcing a Herbert fumble that Christian Elliss recovered, putting the exclamation point on a dominating night. Even as the Chargers inched toward a comeback attempt, New England’s sixth sack finally shut the door for good.

Stats showed Maye leading not only in the air with 268 passing yards, but also on the ground with 67 rushing yards. Rhamondre Stevenson stepped up as the top receiver, with Kayshon Boutte and Hunter Henry close behind.

Herbert’s tough playoff luck continued, logging just 159 passing yards and 57 rushing, as the Chargers exited early once more.

This kind of hard-nosed football is what wins in January. If the Patriots keep it up, they’ll be a tough out. Want more playoff action and news? Check out in-depth coverage below.
